Construction & Development Plan

Because of the size and scope of the LC&M and CPR lines represented in the premise, representing over 150 miles of railway line, it is nearly impossible to re-create the story in its entirety. Other very real constraints are imposed by the lack of available modelling space, and the needs of my family to occupy at least part of our house. Therefore, the layout will be developed in four phases, at least two of which require a larger house!

Phase I - McKerrow & Espanola Jct.

The first portion of the layout will include the CPR Webbwood Subdivision at McKerrow, the CPR yard, the connecting track between the CPR and the LC&M, Espanola Jct. (including the yard, shop, service and office facilities of the LC&M) and Heritage Jct. where the LC&M connects to the North Shore Heritage Railway. The CPR mainline heading west from McKerrow will be built for at least 1/4 scale mile, making the McKerrow wye functional. The Espanola Jct. wye will be non-functional, with only the east leg fully constructed. Operation will be point-to-point, allowing for the following:
  • freight switching in McKerrow yard
  • freight switching in Espanola Jct. yard
  • freight interchange between the CPR and the LC&M
  • freight interchange between the LC&M and the NSHR
  • passenger through service at McKerrow bound for Sault Ste. Marie, and branch line service from Sudbury bound for Little Current
  • industrial service to local industries, including a chemical plant, lumber distributor, and log cabin manufacturer
  • NSHR steam and diesel passenger excursion runs
CPR McKerrow
  • CPR Webbwood Subdivision
  • 3 Track Ladder Yard
  • Passing Siding
  • Station, MOW Sheds
  • Jct. CPR Little Current Subdivision

LC&M Espanola Jct.

  • Jct. CPR Little Current and LC&M Whitefish Subdivisions
  • Engine Service Facilities
  • Mechanical Shops, Offices
  • Team Track

LC&M Heritage Jct.

  • Jct. LC&M Whitefish Subdivision and NSHR Heritage Railway Yard
  • Engine Service Facilities
  • Heritage Steam Railway station and offices
  • Haulage access for Nickel Hill mine
Nickel Hill Mine
  • 30" narrow gauge electric mining railway
  • Plymouth electric switcher with overhead pickup hauls ore from mine
  • Tipple spur allows ore dump to load cars at Heritage Jct.
AER Mirage
  • Main and passing siding, inside hill under Nickel Hill mine
  • Allows hidden staging of trains to enter either LCM or CPR main
  • Connects LCM east of Heritage to CPR east of McKerrow

Phase II - Espanola & Little Current

This portion of the layout will include the towns of Espanola, Whitefish Falls, Turner and Little Current, including the paper plant in Espanola and the swing bridge at Turner. It will be planned as space permits.

Phase III - Spanish & Elliot Lake

This portion of the layout will include the line from Whitefish Falls to Spanish, and from Spanish to Elliot Lake, including the town of Elliot Lake. It will be planned as space permits.

Phase IV - Nairn & Turbine

This portion of the layout will include the towns of Nairn Center and Turbine, including the CPR interchange. It will be planned as space permits.

Standards are very important to the construction of a successful model railway. See the LA CLOCHE & MANITOULIN RAILWAY modelling standards page for more information.
